Crime-busting ‘Chicharito’ is MVP in Manchester

December 5, 2012

For the second consecutive month, Tapatio soccer star Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez has been named “Player of the Month” at Manchester United.

Having been voted the club’s most valued player in October, Hernandez repeated the feat in November, winning 67 percent of the 20,000 votes cast by United fans worldwide.

Such is his popularity in Mexico that the crime rate in the capital drops whenever Hernandez plays, Jorge Carlos Martinez, the chief of police in Mexico City, told British daily The Sun this week.

“Crimes like car jacking, muggings and robberies go down. It seems even the criminals want to take time off to see our hero play,” Martinez said.

Hernandez signed for United, who currently lead the English Premier League, from local side Chivas de Guadalajara in 2010, winning the league in his first season at Old Trafford.

After an underwhelming second season in which he struggled for fitness, he is back to his best this term, having scored nine vital goals in just 17 appearances – eight of which came as a substitute.
