Chivas make a slow start under new coach

January 21, 2013

Having sacked their coach on the eve of the Clausura 2013 professional soccer season, Chivas de Guadalajara have yet to win after three games played.

Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Cruz Azul leaves Chivas in 13th place in the table with just two points to their name under new coach Benjamin Galindo.

Chivas’ local rivals Atlas are faring better this season, having won one, drawn one and lost one, but remain at greater risk of demotion to Mexico’s second division because of their poor points average over the last three years. Atlas have four points to date, but to avoid relegation they must finish above Queretaro, who currently lead them by one point.

Leones Negroes, the University of Guadalajara (UdeG) team, could win promotion to the Liga MX top division, having won all three games so far this season. Leones Negroes are first in the Ascenso MX, five points ahead of rivals Estudiantes Tecos from the Autonomous University of Guadalajara (AUG), who were recently bought by the world’s wealthiest man, Carlos Slim.
