Mexican airline to offer regional flights

October 1, 2013

New budget airline Transportes Aereos Regionales (TAR) will begin running domestic flights to and from Guadalajara on November 30.

TAR will offer single and return flights from Guadalajara to Acapulco, Cuernavaca, Puebla, Queretaro and Toluca. There will also be a service between Puerto Vallarta and Queretaro.

“Our vocation is 100 percent regional, so we are focused on offering nonstop flights lasting less than 1.5 hours,” TAR states on its website.

The airline will fill a niche in the regional travel market as none of its rivals run direct flights from Guadalajara to Acapulco, Cuernavaca or Queretaro. Interjet and Viva Aerobus do not fly direct from Guadalajara to any of TAR’s destinations, while AeroMexico only runs direct flights to Toluca, and Volaris just has direct flights to Toluca and Puebla.

Prices and frequency of flights have yet to be announced but TAR’s Director General Enrique Salvador Guerrero Nieto told Spanish-language daily Mural that flight will only cost 500 pesos more than bus travel to each destination.

TAR currently has a fleet of just three Embraer ERJ145 planes, each with a capacity of 50 passengers, but Guerrero said that they aim to expand and fly 400,000 passengers to and from Guadalajara in the first year of operations and 600,000 in the second year.
